The Virudhunagar police arrested three members of a gang on Friday for allegedly snatching a six-sovereign gold chain and robbing Rs 1,500 and two mobile phones from Nagarani, a 48-year-old government higher secondary school teacher in O Sakkaralingapuram.

The robbery occurred on Thursday when Nagarani was on her way to school on her two-wheeler. The gang, traveling in a car, reportedly snatched her gold chain, cash, and phones.

During the inquiry, police discovered that the same gang had also committed a burglary in Rajakamangalam, Kanniyakumari district on the same day. More alarmingly, the suspects were found to be plotting a murder as retaliation for a double murder in the Ossur police station limits.

Police recovered 8.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery, four watches, two mobile phones, six machetes, three rods, Rs 20,000 in cash, and a four-wheeler from the suspects.

The arrested were identified as Balakumar (29) of Murugapettai, Tiruchy; Ajithkumar (28) of M Balapatti, Salem; and Suresh (21) of Tirunelveli. They were apprehended near the Thirumangalam toll gate in Madurai district.

Special police teams have been formed to capture three other gang members still absconding. The arrested suspects have been remanded to judicial custody.
