In a significant breakthrough, three individuals, including members of an organized human trafficking network, were arrested in Ri-Bhoi district on Tuesday evening. The network was reportedly involved in smuggling Bangladeshi nationals into India.
Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, confirmed that the arrests were made based on reliable intelligence that Bangladeshi nationals were traveling from the Dawki border to Guwahati in a vehicle. A naka checkpoint was set up near Byrnihat Outpost, where authorities intercepted the vehicle (AS-01-FJ-4645).
During the operation, Jannati Sheikh (26) from Khulna, Bangladesh, was found in possession of a forged Indian Aadhaar card, while the driver, Raushan Khan (from Barpeta, Assam), was also taken into custody. Both individuals admitted during interrogation to being part of the organized trafficking network, which facilitated the illegal movement of people across the Bangladesh-India border for financial gain, often without valid documentation.
A case has been filed under Section 14C of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have continued to interrogate the suspects, which led to the arrest of another individual, Balajied Khongsun (27) from Pynursla, on Wednesday.
The authorities are now focusing on tracking down the network’s connections and uncovering the full extent of the operation.
