In a significant crackdown on wildlife trafficking, authorities in Assam’s Nagaon district arrested three individuals for possessing and trafficking tiger and elephant body parts. The joint operation was carried out by the eastern Assam Wildlife Division and Nagaon police on Wednesday, resulting in the seizure of tiger claws, canines, bones, and an elephant tusk.
The individuals arrested were identified as Amar Hansey, Mahendra Borgrang, and Probin Sangma. The trio is suspected of being involved in illegal wildlife trafficking, a crime that continues to threaten endangered species in the region.
In a separate operation, police in Sivasagar district carried out a raid in the Baasbari area of the Bihubor tea estate under Nazira Police Station, apprehending one individual. Three pieces of elephant tusk were recovered from his possession. The investigation is ongoing to trace the source of the tusks and identify any links to broader illegal wildlife networks.
Nagaon police took to social media, stating, “Wildlife crime won’t go unpunished.” The authorities have committed to bringing those responsible for wildlife poaching and trafficking to justice.
Forest officials are also assisting with the ongoing investigations, aiming to dismantle the illegal wildlife trade in the region.
