Three Arrested in Aberdeen Shooting That Left Teen Hospitalized

Victim identified as Kaleb Kelly; suspects include two 18-year-olds and one juvenile

ABERDEEN, N.C. — Three suspects, including two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old juvenile, have been arrested in connection with a shooting that left a 17-year-old boy seriously injured in Aberdeen.

According to a press release from the Aberdeen Police Department issued on May 1, Elijah Jones, 18, of Southern Pines; Khalil McCrimmon, 18, of Carthage; and a 17-year-old male from Robbins have been charged in the April 27 incident.

Authorities responded to a shooting in the parking lot of the Going Going Gone store in Aberdeen, where they found a juvenile victim with a gunshot wound to the upper abdomen. Several other juveniles were attempting to render aid at the scene when officers arrived. Emergency responders transported the victim to UNC Chapel Hill, where he underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.

The victim has since been identified as Kaleb Kelly, 17, according to GoFundMe communications. A fundraiser has been launched to assist with his medical expenses.

Ongoing Investigation Leads to Swift Arrests
Police said the suspects fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. During their investigation, Aberdeen detectives traced Kelly’s stolen wallet to a residence in Carthage, where it was found destroyed. Officers then reviewed surveillance footage, collected statements, and analyzed evidence.

Charges Filed:
Elijah Jones was charged with:

Felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury

Felony robbery with a dangerous weapon

Simple affray

Carrying a concealed gun

Discharging a firearm within city limits

Communicating threats

He was arrested April 30 and is being held without bond.

The juvenile male was charged with:

Felony aiding and abetting armed robbery

Felony destroying criminal evidence

Simple assault

He was also arrested April 30 and transported to Cumberland County Juvenile Detention Center without bond.

Khalil McCrimmon was charged with:

Felony accessory after the fact

Felony destroying criminal evidence

He was arrested April 29 and is being held on a $30,000 secured bond.

Aberdeen Police praised the collaborative efforts of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and emergency medical personnel in responding to the incident and helping to bring the suspects into custody.
