Three days after the murder of notorious history-sheeter Thondai Raj, Chennai police foiled a retaliatory murder plot by arresting four of his close associates in Vyasarpadi. Police said the group was planning to avenge Raj’s killing, which had reignited long-standing gang rivalries in North Chennai.
The arrested men have been identified as:
Rajasekhar alias Kattan Raj
Karan alias Karadi Karan
Naresh alias Makkundai
Yokesh alias Kalaiya
All four were picked up on Wednesday, following police surveillance that began on April 20, the day Raj was hacked to death. During the arrest, officers also seized 1.1kg of ganja from the group. The suspects were interrogated and later remanded in judicial custody.
Earlier, the Vyasarpadi police arrested four others, including Surya, the son of a known rowdy who was allegedly killed by Thondai Raj years ago. Police believe Raj’s murder was part of a revenge plot hatched five years ago, signaling the deep-rooted animosity between rival gangs.
Authorities said that Wednesday’s arrests likely prevented another cycle of gang violence in North Chennai, an area known for turf wars and street-level criminal networks.
