Thomas Nowland Jr. Charged in S.C. Auto Insurance Fraud

SLED says man filed false claim for damaged Escalade

by Sophia Bennett

MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Thomas Scott Nowland Jr. has been charged with auto insurance fraud after investigators say he knowingly filed a false claim for his vehicle.

According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Nowland Jr. submitted a claim to Progressive Insurance for damage to his 2002 Cadillac Escalade, stating the accident occurred after his insurance policy began. The claim was valued at more than $2,000 but less than $10,000.

However, SLED warrants say an investigation determined the vehicle damage actually occurred before the policy went into effect. Investigators allege Nowland Jr. intentionally misrepresented the accident date in an attempt to receive an insurance payout.

He was arrested on Nov. 12 and booked into the Marlboro County Detention Center. The case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Department of Insurance.
