Thomas Capps Charged in 2015 Murder of Ronald Salmons

Staged home invasion unravels after key witness testimony

by Sophia Bennett

MORGAN COUNTY, Mo. — More than eight years after Ronald Lee Salmons was killed, authorities have arrested Thomas Capps, 50, of Stover, and charged him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, following new testimony that revealed the 2015 shooting was staged as a home invasion.

On March 17, 2015, Salmons, 45, was found dead at a residence on Dorsey Lane in Versailles, in what was originally reported as a break-in gone wrong. However, a recent witness statement has unraveled that narrative.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the witness said they were with Capps at the home when Salmons arrived and began yelling. Capps reportedly retrieved a .22 caliber rifle, stepped outside, and the witness heard seven gunshots. Capps then came back inside, requested more bullets, and fired additional rounds into the back door, allegedly to stage forced entry.

The witness further testified that Capps punched them and instructed them to say that Salmons attacked first, had a knife, and was shot inside the home during a struggle. Capps also allegedly retrieved a Bowie-style knife and later claimed Salmons had it.

Capps reportedly coached the witness to tell authorities a fabricated version of events, including that Salmons was the aggressor and that they called 911 immediately after.

Now, years later, this testimony has led prosecutors to file charges, indicating that the case was not a home invasion, but a premeditated killing.

Capps is being held and faces serious charges as the investigation continues.
