A 40-year-old man from Maharashtra’s Thane district lost approximately Rs 27 lakh in a cryptocurrency investment scam after being lured by promises of high returns, a police official said on Friday, as reported by news agency PTI.

The victim filed a complaint with Kolsewadi police station in Kalyan, stating that a Kolhapur resident, Dheeraj Sakalkar, deceived him between May and July this year by persuading him to invest in digital assets.

The accused promised a 30% return on the crypto investment, leading the man to transfer around Rs 27 lakh in multiple instalments.

However, after months of waiting, the victim neither received the promised returns nor the principal amount. The accused eventually became unreachable, the complainant told the police.

An official from Kolsewadi police confirmed that a case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace the accused and recover the defrauded money.
