Thai Woman Suspected of Killing Father in Fire; Denies Involvement

Police investigate woman after father found burned in Kalasin hut

by Sophia Bennett

A 26-year-old Thai woman, Pui, is being investigated for allegedly burning her father, 73-year-old Boonliang Jansri, to death in a fire at a hut in Kalasin’s Khong Chai district on January 31, 2025. However, Pui denies the accusations, maintaining that she had no involvement in her father’s death.

The fire, which broke out at the hut on January 31, was extinguished before the authorities discovered Boonliang’s body inside. Upon investigation, it was found that his arms and neck were bound with stainless steel wire, and a knife was located near his body. Despite this, the cause of death remains unclear, and the body has been sent for autopsy.

Authorities interviewed over 10 individuals, including Boonliang’s children, relatives, and local residents, all of whom described him as a heavy drinker who often spent time alone in the hut while intoxicated. Police have found no evidence that Boonliang had any known conflicts with others.

Pui, who was the last person seen with her father before the fire, was captured on security footage leaving the hut shortly before the fire started. Additionally, a local vendor reported that Pui had purchased petrol from a grocery store before the incident, which prompted her to become the prime suspect.

In her defense, Pui claimed she bought cooking oil, not petrol, and denied having any motive to harm her father. She emphasized that the small amount of cash her father had—only 10,000 baht—was not enough to make her commit murder. Pui further stated that she had always been responsible for her father’s care and suggested that if she were after money, she would have targeted her husband, who had a life insurance policy worth over a million baht.

In an interview with Channel 7, Boonliang’s son expressed confusion over the situation, stating he had no motive to harm his father and could not speculate on who might be responsible for the crime. He expressed hope that the police would resolve the case soon.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities pledging to conclude it as soon as possible.
