STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — Teriane Jackson, a 24-year-old woman from Houston, Texas, has been charged with stealing more than $22,000 from a Florida-based non-profit organization that supports women affected by domestic violence.

According to the Stuart Police Department (SPD), the investigation into Jackson began in October 2023 when the organization discovered that one of its vendor emails had been compromised. The hacker, who impersonated the non-profit’s CEO, instructed the finance director to transfer $22,800 to a bank account under Jackson’s name on October 24, 2023.

SPD’s investigation revealed that Jackson opened the bank account in Houston just a month earlier, in September 2023, shortly before committing the theft. Once the funds were transferred, Jackson reportedly made multiple cash withdrawals and purchased money orders.

Jackson was apprehended in North Carolina on October 4, after an arrest warrant was issued. She was then extradited to Florida, where she faces charges of grand theft.
