COVE CITY, N.C. — An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder following a deadly stabbing in Craven County late Monday night.

The Craven County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a home on Sidney Road in Cove City around 11:45 p.m. on Jan. 5, 2025, after receiving a report of an assault. The suspect had reportedly fled the scene.

While en route, deputies located the suspect vehicle on Highway 55 near Wetherington Farm Road. A traffic stop was conducted, and the suspect, Derrick Preston White, 18, was taken into custody without incident.

At the home, deputies found Anthony White, 77, deceased from multiple stab wounds. Authorities say Derrick White, who also lives at the residence, allegedly assaulted his grandmother before fatally attacking Anthony White.

Derrick White is charged with an open count of murder and is being held at the Craven County Detention Facility without bond.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
