Third local teacher arrested in Albuquerque for child abuse

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Concerns are mounting among parents as Julian Gunther, a local teacher, was arrested for allegedly sending sexual messages to someone he believed was a minor. Gunther’s arrest marks the third case in recent weeks involving teachers accused of inappropriate conduct with children in the area.

Police arrested Gunther after a sting operation in which a detective posed as a 12-year-old girl. Court documents reveal that Gunther, who taught seventh-grade social studies at Rio Grande Academy of Fine Arts, engaged in explicit conversations and sent nude photos and videos over a two-week period. Despite knowing the supposed girl’s age, Gunther continued the communication, describing detailed sexual acts and expressing concern about getting caught.

Gunther reportedly revealed personal details during the exchanges, including that he is a father. He also made troubling comments about emancipation to the assumed minor. The teacher began working mid-semester but did not have his contract renewed, with the school citing personnel confidentiality.

This arrest follows two other recent cases in Albuquerque. Patrick Corr, a public school teacher, was charged with inappropriate relationships with students and impregnating a 15-year-old girl. Additionally, Kelly McEachran, a former Hope Christian Elementary teacher, faces charges for inappropriate touching of an 11-year-old.

Experts urge parents to engage their children in conversations about safe boundaries and trusted adults. Children should be encouraged to speak up about any unsafe experiences to prevent further abuse.
