FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Dominic Jrael Hunter, a Cumberland County teacher, was arrested Tuesday on charges related to an incident from nearly 10 years ago involving a minor student, according to a warrant filed by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

Hunter, 37, is accused of taking indecent liberties with a student at Howard Learning Academy on December 3, 2015, while serving as a music teacher there. At the time of the alleged incident, Hunter was 27 years old, and the student was a minor.

Currently teaching band at Douglas Byrd High School, Hunter was taken into custody and charged with indecent liberties with a student.

Court records show Hunter was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond. He made his first appearance in Cumberland County Court on Tuesday and is scheduled to return on August 5.

Hunter joined Cumberland County Schools in 2012. He worked as a music teacher at Howard Learning Academy (now Ramsey High School) from 2012 to 2019 and has been a band teacher at Douglas Byrd since 2019.

The school district notified law enforcement when they became aware of the allegations. Hunter is suspended with pay pending the investigation’s outcome.

“We take these allegations seriously,” Cumberland County Schools said in a statement. “They do not reflect the standards we expect of those who serve our students. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority. We are fully cooperating with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and will continue to support their investigation.”
