Michael Miller, a warden at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Daniel Webster Wallace Unit in Colorado City, was arrested on misdemeanor charges after allegedly fraudulently changing prices at a Lubbock Wal-Mart. Court records show Miller was booked on August 14 into the Lubbock County Detention Center for Class B Misdemeanor counts of theft and fraudulent removal or concealment of price tags.
The 48-year-old Miller is accused of stealing nearly $140 worth of merchandise by repeatedly scanning a $.53 price for cross stitch thread instead of the actual items at the self-checkout terminal on Quaker Avenue. According to a probable cause affidavit, security cameras captured Miller bagging about $137.90 worth of goods but only paying $4.77.
A spokesperson for the TDCJ stated, “The agency is deeply disappointed, and his conduct is entirely unacceptable.” They also confirmed that steps are being taken to separate Miller from the agency.
Court documents reveal Miller was released on August 15 after posting two bonds, each set at $1,000. The TDCJ website for the Webster unit has since removed his photo and now lists the senior warden position as vacant.
