Tawana Cox Arrested for Leaving Puppy to Die in Hot Car in Ohio

Woman charged with animal cruelty after leaving puppy inside 90-degree vehicle

by Amelia Crawford

HARTVILLE, Ohio — Police have arrested Tawana Cox, 49, a Canton woman, after she reportedly left her six-to-eight-week-old puppy inside a hot car without water or air while she went shopping.

According to court records, Cox left the puppy in her vehicle on July 28 when the temperature was around 90 degrees. Surveillance footage showed Cox was away from the car for more than an hour.

Cox allegedly told police that the puppy was with her, hidden inside her shirt, but the video evidence contradicted her statement.

She was charged with cruelty to animals and falsification. Cox was arrested on Monday and released from Stark County Jail after posting a $2,500 bond. She is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday.
