BRONX, N.Y. — A Bronx man has been charged in connection with the violent robbery of an off-duty NYPD officer, nearly one month after the brutal attack left the officer critically injured.

Taveon Hargrove, 23, of Seward Avenue, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder. He is accused of being an accomplice in the May 24 assault and robbery of Officer Chowdhury Nafees, 27, which occurred around 4 a.m. on St. Peters Avenue.

According to police, Nafees was forced to the ground by two individuals who struck him repeatedly in the face, causing multiple fractures, and held a knife to his throat. The attackers then stole his NYPD-issued firearm, wallet, and iPhone before fleeing on foot.

EMS rushed Nafees to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. A video shared by the NYPD on May 28 showed the officer being released from the hospital.

Wayne Lucas, 23, of Tompkins Avenue in Staten Island, was apprehended on June 4 after authorities released surveillance images and requested public assistance in identifying both Lucas and Hargrove.

Both 23-year-old suspects were initially charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, and attempted criminal possession of a weapon. They have since been indicted on those charges and others, according to public records.

A third suspect, 55-year-old Jeffrey Hargrove—whose first name is also spelled Jeffery in some records—was arrested shortly after the incident. He faces lesser charges including petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He is due to be arraigned on July 14.

Taveon Hargrove is scheduled to appear for arraignment on June 25 in Bronx Supreme Court. No information on his bail or legal representation was available as of publication. Lucas, who pleaded not guilty, remains in custody at Rikers Island and is due in court on September 12.

Officer Nafees, appointed to the NYPD in January 2024, is assigned to Police Service Area 9, covering NYCHA complexes in Queens.
