Tarell Isaac McMillian Charged with Murder in Officer’s Death
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the fatal shooting of Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan. The shooting occurred Monday at a Food Lion supermarket in Greensboro, where Officer Horan was responding to a report of a man with a gun. McMillian is currently being held without bond.
In addition to the murder charge, McMillian faces multiple charges stemming from a vehicle pursuit that led to his arrest in Duplin County, located about 150 miles southeast of Greensboro. Police confirmed that no other individuals are being sought in connection with the incident.
Officer Horan, who joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 and became a sworn officer in early 2018, was shot just before midday on Monday. Horan had a distinguished career, also serving in the U.S. Coast Guard since 2000. Assistant Police Chief Milford J. Harris praised Horan as an “excellent officer” with a stellar reputation in both the department and the community.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper extended his condolences, calling the incident a “senseless act of violence” and honoring Officer Horan’s bravery and dedication to his duty. Food Lion, where the shooting occurred, announced the store would remain closed as authorities continue their investigation, and the company is providing support for affected employees.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate the shooting.
