Tara Hamilton Arrested in Lenoir County Identity Theft

Woman accused of $3,000 electricity fraud scheme

A woman has been arrested in connection with an identity theft case reported in Lenoir County, North Carolina, according to the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Tara Hamilton, 45, of Johnston County, North Carolina, was taken into custody on Feb. 25 by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said deputies began looking into the case after a resident in Lenoir County discovered their personal information had been used without permission to accumulate about $3,000 in electricity charges. Officials said the victim was unaware of the fraudulent activity until a debt collector contacted them regarding the unpaid balance.

Following the investigation, Hamilton was charged with identity theft and obtaining property by false pretenses.

Authorities said she was given a $5,000 secured bond and was booked into the Johnston County Jail.
