A Tamarac man, Kevon Powell, 21, was arrested on March 28 and charged with grand theft of a firearm and discharging a firearm in public after deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire.
According to a report from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the 5900 block of Abbey Road after receiving reports of two males shooting handguns into a canal. Witnesses described the suspects as one older male and one younger black male. Deputies arrived at the scene and found evidence of the shooting, including shell casings near the water.
Witnesses reported hearing the gunfire and observing the two suspects near the canal, with only one of them firing the weapon and collecting the spent casings. Shortly after, deputies found Powell walking near Riverside Avenue and identified him as a suspect. Powell admitted to discharging the firearm into the canal and claimed that his younger brother had accompanied him but did not handle the weapon.
Powell informed deputies that the gun was inside a fanny pack at his mother’s nearby home. With his mother’s consent, deputies searched the house and recovered the fanny pack, which contained a loaded handgun, ammunition, and Powell’s personal documents, including his birth certificate and bank cards.
Although Powell initially claimed the gun belonged to a friend named “Ace,” investigators found that Powell’s personal items contradicted his story. The weapon was found to be stolen from Palm Beach County, and Powell’s possession of the firearm violated an active protection order. Powell was arrested and taken to the Broward County Main Jail.
