In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, Syed Nasru, a 30-year-old migrant worker from Bihar, was arrested by Cottonpet police for allegedly severing the udders of three cows in Bengaluru’s Vinayakanagar area on the early morning of January 12, 2025. The gruesome act has sparked widespread outrage and political backlash.

Karna Naik, the owner of the three Jersey cross-breed cows valued at around Rs2.5 lakh each, discovered the injured animals bleeding heavily at about 5:30 AM when he went to milk them. Veterinary experts at Chamarajpet Animal Hospital confirmed the cows were in critical condition and required urgent surgery.

Deputy Commissioner of Police S Girish stated that Nasru, found intoxicated near the crime scene and employed at a nearby plastic and cloth bag stitching shop, was immediately taken into custody. An FIR was registered under the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS) for animal cruelty and grievous harm.

The incident has escalated tensions, with BJP leaders, including MLC Ravi Kumar, demanding a thorough probe and Rs5 lakh compensation for the owner. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda assured that Nasru would be prosecuted under the amended legal framework.

Leader of Opposition R Ashok visited the site and warned of a ‘black Sankranti’ protest if strict action is not taken, condemning the act as a “jihadi” attack. Animal rights activists have also called for a psychiatric evaluation of Nasru, highlighting concerns over migrant worker integration and urban violence.

The attack has ignited heated debates on animal rights and the protection of livestock in urban India.
