Suspect Arrested for Snatching Gold Necklace from Tourist in Bangkok

Sarawut, 27, confesses to stealing and pawning necklace, with funds lost to online gambling

BANGKOK, THAILAND — Sarawut, a 27-year-old man, was apprehended by Phaya Thai police on November 28, 2024, following an investigation into a gold necklace theft that occurred in October. The suspect was linked to the crime scene in Ratchathewi through surveillance footage and physical evidence, including a helmet and clothing found at the scene.

Details of the Incident
The incident took place on October 3, 2024, when a foreign tourist was walking on Phetchaburi Soi 15. According to the victim, a man on a Honda motorcycle approached him, snatched a 10-baht gold necklace from his neck, and fled the scene.

Investigation and Arrest
After extensive investigation, Phaya Thai police identified Sarawut as the prime suspect. A warrant for his arrest was issued on November 27, and he was arrested the following day at his residence in Din Daeng.

Confession and Pawned Necklace
Upon his arrest, Sarawut confessed to the crime. He admitted to selling the stolen necklace for 360,000 baht at a pawn shop in Bang Phlat district. The proceeds from the theft were reportedly spent on online gambling, which he subsequently lost. Authorities also discovered that Sarawut had a previous conviction for theft in 2020 in Warin Chamrap.

Current Status
Sarawut is currently in police custody at Phaya Thai police station and is awaiting further legal action. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Bangkok authorities to address street-level theft and hold offenders accountable.
