In a disturbing incident from Surat district, Gujarat, five individuals have been arrested for the brutal murder of 48-year-old farm worker Suresh Verma. The crime reportedly stemmed from suspicions that Verma had stolen mangoes worth Rs50,000 from the orchard where he was employed.

According to Bardoli Deputy Superintendent of Police HL Rathod, the incident occurred on the night of May 21 in Akoti village, Bardoli. The accused—Ashfak Rayan, Vinod Agrawal, Mohammed Umar, Dashrath Maurya, and Yakub Abdul Gaffar—had leased a mango orchard and recently began suspecting Verma of stealing produce and selling it illegally.

That night, the five men tied Verma to a tree at the farm and beat him until he lost consciousness. Ashfak later contacted Verma’s wife, demanding Rs50,000 as compensation for the alleged theft.

Realizing that Verma had died from the assault, the accused transported his body in a car and dumped it in a canal in Kamrej taluka to cover up the crime.

When Verma failed to return home, his family filed a missing person complaint with Bardoli police. They also reported the extortion call made by Ashfak. Days later, Kamrej police found an unidentified body in the canal, which was later confirmed by Verma’s family.

Based on the investigation and evidence gathered, police registered a murder case on May 31 and arrested all five suspects.

Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing as they seek to collect more evidence and eyewitness testimonies. The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns around farm worker safety, labour exploitation, and violent retaliation over minor disputes in rural India.
