by Ananya Mehta

Ghaziabad police have arrested two men involved in the planned theft of Rs12.4 lakh from an ATM in Jassipura on July 24. The accused, both ATM technicians, allegedly spent two months preparing for the heist.

The suspects were identified as 33-year-old Suraj Narayan from Ayodhya, residing in Sangam Vihar, Delhi, and 34-year-old Sonu Rajput from Mainpuri, living in Munirka, Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhawal Jaiswal stated that the duo was tracked and caught through electronic surveillance. “They were familiar with the ATM. Sonu, an ATM technician with a service company, deliberately tampered with the lock. When the lock had to be replaced, he was sent to repair it and left screws loose intentionally. On July 18, Suraj arrived on a bike and sprayed black paint on the CCTV camera. On July 19, Sonu cut the CCTV wires. Finally, on July 24, they pulled out cash and fled,” said Jaiswal.

The accused admitted to dividing the stolen Rs12.4 lakh equally between themselves.

An FIR was registered under BNS sections 331(4) (house-trespass or housebreaking) and 305 (theft) at Kotwali police station, following a complaint by ATM company executives.

“CCTV footage from a nearby flyover showed them making a call. Using electronic surveillance, we traced and apprehended them near Vijay Nagar flyover,” added a police officer.
