In a tragic case of domestic violence, Suraj Kujur (28) allegedly beat his father, Somara Kujur (55), to death with a wooden stick following a heated argument at their home in Barabasa Hadratoli Basti, under Birmitrapur Police Station, Sundargarh district.
Somara Kujur, a mason working in nearby villages, lived with his son Suraj, who reportedly remained unemployed and regularly consumed alcohol. Family sources said frequent disputes over Suraj’s drinking habits had escalated tensions over time.
On Friday night, a disagreement turned violent. Suraj struck his father multiple times with a wooden stick, inflicting fatal injuries. Believing his father was merely unconscious, Suraj went to sleep, unaware of the severity of the assault.
The next morning, Somara’s nephew, Arjun Kujur, visited the house and discovered his uncle’s bloodied body, immediately alerting the police. Officer-in-Charge Ramprasad Nag and his team recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Suraj was arrested at the scene.
A case was registered under relevant sections of law for murder, based on the written complaint by Arjun Kujur. Suraj Kujur was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.
Authorities noted that the incident highlights the dangers of alcohol abuse and unresolved family conflicts, particularly in rural communities, and urged families facing similar tensions to seek counseling or mediation to prevent such tragedies.
