Two repeat offenders, Suraj (28) and Neeraj alias Kashi (35), were arrested for allegedly snatching gold earrings from an 80-year-old woman near a temple in Farsh Bazar, Delhi, on August 2.
The woman was returning home after offering prayers when the duo, riding a motorcycle, allegedly snatched her earrings and fled the scene. A case was registered at the Farsh Bazar Police Station, prompting an immediate investigation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam stated that CCTV footage revealed the suspects riding a silver motorcycle with the rear number plate partially obscured by mud and the front plate removed to avoid detection.
Through surveillance, the police identified the vehicle as registered to Ramashankar of North Ghonda. He disclosed that the bike was being used by his son, Suraj. Acting on this lead, police set a trap in the area and arrested Suraj and Neeraj while they were on the same motorcycle.
Initially evasive, both suspects eventually admitted to hiding the stolen earrings at Suraj’s residence. A police raid led to the recovery of the jewellery.
The duo also confessed to a similar snatching incident in New Usmanpur on July 28. Suraj has five prior cases, while Neeraj is linked to 19 cases, including robbery, snatching, and arms-related crimes. Both were recently released from jail.
Police are investigating their involvement in other crimes across Delhi.
