An excise and taxation inspector, Sumitra Godara, has been dismissed from service following a conviction in a bribery case, officials confirmed on Monday. Another officer, Excise and Taxation Officer Roshan Lal, is also facing dismissal after being sentenced alongside Godara.
Both were convicted in a bribery case related to GST registration and sentenced to five years in prison, along with a Rs 1 lakh fine each. Godara’s dismissal was ordered by Excise and Taxation Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh, while Lal’s removal awaits state government approval.
The case originated in 2022 when the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted an operation after a complaint from supplier Mohit, alleging that the officers solicited bribes to provide a GST registration number. All involved, including clerk Pawan, were arrested during a sting operation.
In a separate incident in Mumbai, three individuals were arrested for allegedly looting valuables worth Rs 50 lakh from a businessman’s home in Andheri. The suspects—Suryamani Nadar, Jaywant Charsing Pawar, and Surya Kadvi Mudaliar—took advantage of the owners’ absence during a family wedding in Jaipur.
Police discovered the crime on February 10, when an employee noticed signs of forced entry. CCTV footage helped identify Mudaliar, who then led authorities to Nadar and Pawar. Efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen jewelry and other valuables.
