A 25-year-old man, who allegedly turned to crime after incurring heavy losses in online gambling, was arrested by Jankipuram police on Monday for stealing gold jewellery worth nearly Rs10 lakh from a local jewellery store.
The accused, identified as Sumit Mishra, a resident of Kamlaabad Barouli in Jankipuram, reportedly carried out the theft during business hours on Sunday. The incident, which lasted only a few seconds, was fully captured on the shop’s CCTV cameras.
According to police, Mishra arrived at the store on a motorcycle and posed as a genuine customer. He asked the shopkeeper to show him several gold rings and pretended to examine the designs. After expressing dissatisfaction, he requested more options. When the shopkeeper turned away to fetch additional jewellery, Mishra swiftly grabbed two display boxes containing 21 gold rings and fled the scene.
Inspector Vinod Tiwari said the accused had conducted a prior recce of the area before executing the theft. Mishra, who works at a private firm, had reportedly suffered significant financial losses due to online gambling, which investigators believe motivated the crime.
Following a complaint from the shop owner, police analysed CCTV footage and gathered local intelligence. Mishra was arrested on Tiwaripuram–Kotwa road on Monday morning. Further investigation is underway.
