New Delhi – In a dramatic turn of events, Delhi Police arrested two men, including the complainant himself, for allegedly faking a robbery of Rs13 lakh in Moti Nagar, West Delhi, police said on Friday.
The mastermind, Subhash Chand (22), works as an accountant at a trading firm. He allegedly conspired with his friend, Vijaypal (26), a resident of Mahendergarh, Haryana, to stage the robbery and steal the cash.
Subhash initially reported the incident on Thursday, claiming that he had been attacked by six unidentified men on three motorcycles on a flyover shortly after withdrawing Rs13 lakh from a bank. He told police that the assailants brandished knives, injured him, and fled with the cash.
However, investigators grew suspicious when CCTV footage from nearby locations did not show any sign of a robbery or suspicious activity. Additionally, Subhash’s injuries were minor and inconsistent with a knife attack.
Upon intense questioning, Subhash confessed to fabricating the story. He admitted that he had handed over the Rs13 lakh to Vijaypal at Rajouri Garden Metro Station before filing the false complaint to mislead the police.
The motive? Subhash had reportedly lost Rs30 lakh in gambling and was under immense financial pressure. To recover part of the lost money, he withdrew funds from his employer’s account and hatched the plan with Vijaypal, who escaped via bike taxi, then boarded a bus to his village.
A police team was dispatched to Mahendergarh, where they successfully recovered the full Rs13 lakh from Vijaypal’s home.
Both Subhash and Vijaypal have been arrested, and further investigation is ongoing.
