Indiana Duo Arrested After Felony Traffic Stop on I-69

GRANT COUNTY, IN – Two Indiana residents were arrested on August 11 after a stolen vehicle was located and stopped on Interstate 69, according to the Indiana State Police.

Steven Robbins, 31, and Morgan Phillips, 28, are facing preliminary auto theft charges, with Robbins also accused of identity deception and false informing. The traffic stop occurred around 12:55 p.m. on the Exit 264 ramp, assisted by the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

During the stop, Phillips provided her valid Indiana ID, while Robbins falsely identified himself as “Curtis Robbins.” Further questioning revealed his true identity, and police discovered Robbins had active warrants in Adams County.

Due to high temperatures, officers read both individuals their Miranda rights and transported them to the Grant County Jail. Both initially claimed they did not know the vehicle was stolen. Phillips said the car had been given to her by a friend.

However, authorities confirmed the vehicle’s VIN was associated with a prior theft report. Investigation also revealed that Phillips was a suspect in a separate auto theft case from April 2024 in Muncie.

Robbins and Phillips were booked into the Grant County Jail on $2,505 bail each. Robbins faces additional charges for identity deception (Level 6 felony) and false informing (Class B misdemeanor). Both had their initial court hearings on August 18 in Grant Superior Court 3.
