Homicide Investigation Underway in Alexander City; Suspect Charged with Capital Murder
ALEXANDER CITY, AL – A fatal home invasion in Alexander City has led to the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect on capital murder charges, according to state authorities.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigations launched an inquiry after a deadly shooting on Saturday, July 19, 2025, in the 4000 block of Washington Street. Agents responded to the scene at the request of the Alexander City Police Department at around 11:15 A.M.
At the scene, authorities discovered Toyias Gopher, 32, of Alexander City, dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators determined the incident occurred during a home invasion robbery.
Steven Abercrombie, also of Alexander City, was arrested in connection with the shooting and charged with Capital Murder. He is currently being held at the Tallapoosa County Jail.
The investigation is being led by ALEA, with assistance from the Alexander City Police Department, Montgomery Police, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office, ATF Montgomery Office, and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.
In a statement, 5th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Mike Segrest explained that his office recused itself due to a conflict of interest involving an employee. The Alabama Attorney General’s Office has taken over the prosecution, and the local DA’s office has been “fire-walled” from the investigation.
Segrest expressed his condolences to the victim’s loved ones, assuring the public that “Justice will be served.”
No further details have been released. The investigation is ongoing.
