LEE COUNTY, AL — A Phenix City man has been arrested in connection with the burglary of two storage units belonging to a nonprofit organization in Smiths Station.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office began investigating on March 14, 2026, after receiving reports that items valued at approximately $2,100 had been stolen from storage units located in the 9000 block of Lee Road 246.

Two days later, investigators reviewed surveillance footage and identified a suspect, leading them to Stephen Michael Hammock Jr., 37. Authorities executed a search warrant at his residence on Lee Road 977, where they recovered multiple stolen items.

A second search warrant at a nearby storage unit resulted in the recovery of additional property. All recovered items were returned to the nonprofit organization.

Hammock has been charged with two counts of third-degree burglary and one count of second-degree theft of property. He is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Center on a $9,000 bond.
