Washington County (WRGB) — New York State Police have arrested 59-year-old Stephen R. Gillis of Argyle following a pursuit involving a dirt bike on August 31, 2025.
Authorities say around 8:11 p.m., troopers attempted to stop Gillis for riding a dirt bike without a helmet on Main Street in Argyle. When he refused to stop, officers initiated a pursuit that temporarily ended after Gillis drove off the roadway into a yard.
Troopers later found Gillis again on Elm Street, but the chase ended when he crashed into bushes and lost control of the dirt bike. Police say he resisted arrest before being taken into custody.
During the arrest, troopers reportedly discovered narcotics and a glass smoking device with drug residue. Further investigation revealed that Gillis did not have a valid driver’s license, and the dirt bike was unregistered and uninsured.
Gillis now faces several charges, including:
Three counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance
Resisting Arrest
Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle
Multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations
He was transported to the Washington County Correctional Facility and is awaiting arraignment.
