NEWMARKET, N.H. – Authorities say a 38-year-old woman, Kylie Fritz, was murdered in her Newmarket home late Sunday night, and the suspect was arrested after making troubling comments to police following a nearby car crash.
Police in Exeter responded to a single-vehicle crash near North Hampton Road and Route 101 around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. The vehicle had been abandoned when officers arrived, prompting a K-9 search of the area.
Shortly afterward, Stephen Field, 39, of North Hampton, was located and taken into custody. He was charged with:
Driving under the influence (second offense)
Conduct after an accident
Alcohol ignition interlock circumvention
Following his arrest, Field made statements that raised concern, prompting Exeter police to request a wellness check at a home in nearby Newmarket.
When Newmarket officers arrived at the residence on Maple Street, they discovered Fritz deceased from a gunshot wound.
The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued for Field on additional charges:
Second-degree murder
Falsifying physical evidence
An autopsy on Fritz is scheduled for Wednesday, and Field is expected to be arraigned the same day at a courthouse in Brentwood.
Newmarket, with a population of roughly 10,000, lies about eight miles from Exeter, where the crash and subsequent arrest occurred.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.
