CUMBERLAND, FRANKLIN, AND YORK COUNTIES, Pa. (WHP) — A Romanian man has been sentenced for his role in a multi-county fraud scheme involving stolen SNAP benefits and electronic card information.
Stefan-Alin Doleanu, 29, was sentenced on March 27 to two years in federal prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. After serving his sentence, he will be deported from the United States.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Doleanu and several co-conspirators used stolen SNAP EBT card data to make thousands of dollars in fraudulent purchases at Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club locations in Camp Hill, Chambersburg, Mechanicsburg, and York. The crimes took place between November 2022 and March 2023.
Authorities also named Eliza Boleanu as another individual involved in the scheme, though her case status has not been detailed.
In addition to his prison sentence, Doleanu was ordered to pay $14,255.97 in restitution. Federal prosecutors emphasized that this type of fraud targets public assistance programs meant to help those in need and will be aggressively prosecuted.
