LEONARDTOWN, Md. – State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling announced today that a St. Mary’s County jury has convicted 26-year-old Damauriae Myzuan Jones of Lexington Park for distributing fentanyl and counterfeit narcotics.
The charges relate to a December 21, 2023 incident, when law enforcement responded to reports of an unresponsive woman. Upon arrival, officers found the victim deceased. Toxicology results confirmed fentanyl in her bloodstream, with the medical examiner ruling fentanyl intoxication as the cause of death. Evidence collected at the scene included a cut straw and pills resembling oxycodone, both testing positive for fentanyl according to the Maryland State Police lab.
Further investigation uncovered electronic payments and communication between Jones and the victim related to a narcotics transaction, confirming that Jones distributed the lethal fentanyl on the night of the victim’s overdose.
“Fentanyl is devastating our community, and this case is a tragic example,” stated State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling. “These deadly pills are counterfeit, unregulated, and often disguised as prescription drugs like oxycodone, but laced with fentanyl.”
Jones is currently held without bond awaiting sentencing and faces up to 40 years in prison.
The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Lisa Ridge, Chief of Narcotics, on behalf of St. Mary’s County citizens. The investigation was conducted by the Vice Narcotics Unit of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. The Honorable Donnell Turner presided over the trial.
