Srikakulam Police Arrest Gangadhar Harish in Medical Seats Scam

Agent Detained for Rs 2 Crore Fraud Promising Medical Seats Abroad

by Ananya Mehta

Srikakulam police have apprehended absconding agent Gangadhar Harish from Karimnagar, Telangana, who was involved in a medical seats scam promising seats in Kazakhstan. Harish was arrested on Thursday after being detained by immigration officials at New Delhi airport while attempting to flee the country. A lookout notice had been issued against him nearly 10 months ago following complaints from victims.

Harish reportedly duped students in Srikakulam and other cities including Vizianagaram, Hyderabad, Medak, and Karimnagar by offering low-cost medical seats in Kazakhstan’s Astana Medical University. He collected nearly Rs 2 crore from seven students in Srikakulam alone, with amounts ranging between Rs 28 lakh and Rs 48 lakh per student, covering fees for six years and hostel charges.

While Harish paid the first-year fees to the college, students were later removed for non-payment of subsequent years. Many students and parents confronted him, but he allegedly attacked them with the help of his security personnel. Complaints were lodged with local police after students returned from Kazakhstan, with some also informing the Kazakhstan police and the Indian embassy.

Astana Medical University in Nur Sultan is a government medical university ranked 14th in Kazakhstan and is a popular choice among Indian students due to its affordable fees and MBBS-equivalent degree.
