In a major blow to international drug syndicates, the Amritsar City Police Commissionerate arrested Soni Singh alias Soni, a notorious drug smuggler, and five of his associates, seizing 8.1 kilograms of heroin during a coordinated crackdown.
The arrested associates have been identified as Gursewak Singh, Vishaldeep Singh alias Gola, Gurpreet Singh, and Arshdeep Singh, all residents of Ajnala in Amritsar.
According to Director General of Punjab Police, Gaurav Yadav, the drug cartel was operating with cross-border support from Pakistan, using drones to deliver heroin consignments into Indian territory. He further revealed that the network utilized hotels as storage and transit points to distribute the drugs across regions.
The operation was launched based on credible intelligence inputs, Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated. The team first arrested Soni Singh from the city outskirts with 150 grams of heroin and drug money. Interrogation revealed that Soni had six previous NDPS Act cases and was released from jail in June. Post-release, he reportedly facilitated the delivery of around 30 kg of heroin via drone drops.
His confession led to the arrest of Gursewak Singh, who was caught with 8.037 kg of heroin and was managing logistics within the city. The remaining members of the smuggling module were also arrested in follow-up operations.
Authorities have confirmed that further arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation continues, with a focus on uncovering the syndicate’s handlers, distribution network, and financial links.
