Popular Skeem Saam actor and Thobela FM presenter, Skhumbuzo Mbatha, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Saturday, March 8, 2025. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) stopped him at a roadblock between Barry Hertzog Avenue and Napier Road in Parktown at around 8:30 PM.
Authorities reported that a strong smell of alcohol was detected coming from Mbatha’s white Nissan Navara. He consented to a breathalyser test, which showed that his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit of 0.51 mg/l. Following protocol, officers also drew a blood sample for further testing.
Mbatha was then handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) at Parkwood police station, where he spent the night behind bars. He now faces drunk driving charges and is expected to appear in court soon.
This is not Mbatha’s first legal incident. In 2020, he was wrongfully arrested after giving a woman a lift home. However, the details surrounding that case were later clarified.
Authorities continue to crack down on drunk driving, urging motorists to prioritize road safety.
