ENTEBBE, Uganda — The Chief Magistrates Court in Entebbe has further remanded six suspects accused of operating a gold scam at Entebbe International Airport.
The suspects—Kananura Daniel, Mpomba Richard, Muhwezi Benon, Nkahirwa Pascal, Mujuzi John Keneddy, and Bekalaze Ismail—were arrested on September 30 following President Museveni’s directive to investigate illegal activities at the airport. During the arrest, authorities discovered 11 plastic boxes containing 300 metal bars that the suspects falsely claimed were gold, intending to defraud unsuspecting investors. However, forensic analysis conducted by the Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines confirmed that the items were other minerals.
Initially charged on October 11, the suspects face multiple counts, including dealing in minerals without a license, mingling minerals with intent to defraud, and smuggling minerals. The arrests were a result of collaboration between the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, the Criminal Investigations Directorate, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The suspects remain in custody as further court proceedings are awaited.
