Security forces have arrested six drug peddlers, including a woman, and seized narcotics worth approximately Rs 6.56 crore in Assam and Mizoram over the past 24 hours, officials said.
In Silchar, Cachar Police intercepted a passenger bus arriving from Manipur after receiving credible intelligence. The police arrested three individuals—Md. Achouba, Kamthiangsan Khongsal, and Saidur Rahman—and recovered 3.09 kg of suspected morphine hidden inside packets of foreign cigarettes. Additionally, 240 cartons of Myanmarese cigarettes and other drugs worth around Rs 5 crore were seized.
In Mizoram, three separate operations in Champhai and Zokhawthar districts led to the arrest of three persons, including a woman, and the confiscation of drugs valued at Rs 1.56 crore.
Meanwhile, Customs Preventive forces conducted raids in Silchar and Agartala on June 18, seizing drugs worth Rs 30.17 crore and arresting one person. The Customs department reaffirmed its commitment to combat cross-border crimes, including smuggling of narcotics, fake currency, wildlife articles, and money laundering.
Northeastern states bordering Myanmar, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram, remain vulnerable to drug trafficking. Myanmar’s Chin state is a known hub for smuggling narcotics and other contraband into India and neighboring Bangladesh.
