Singer Vyroota Arrested for Allegedly Procuring Abortion

Vyroota and Manager Face Charges After Pressure on Woman to Abort

by Amelia Crawford

Ugandan singer Vyroota, whose real name is Musigazi Abdulaziz, has been arrested on charges related to procuring an abortion. The 20-year-old musician is accused of impregnating a young woman and, upon being notified of the pregnancy, failing to take responsibility.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, confirmed the arrest during an interview with Sanyuka Television on Thursday. Onyango revealed that Vyroota, along with his manager Walugembe, allegedly pressured the young woman into seeking an abortion, a move that caused significant distress to her and her family.

Both Vyroota and his manager are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

In Uganda, the termination of a pregnancy is strictly regulated by law. According to Article 22, item 2 of the Ugandan Constitution, abortion is prohibited unless permitted by law. The Penal Code of 1950 outlines severe penalties for those involved in procuring or assisting in unlawful abortions. Section 141 of the Penal Code states that anyone who administers poison, force, or any other means to procure a miscarriage is guilty of a felony and can face up to 14 years in prison. Section 142 further imposes a seven-year sentence for attempting an unlawful abortion, while Section 143 states that those assisting in such actions can face up to three years in prison.

The charges against Vyroota have sparked a public outcry, as the case raises questions about the enforcement of abortion laws in Uganda and the responsibility of individuals in positions of power. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of Vyroota’s involvement and whether others will face charges.
