The CID Crime Branch on Thursday presented Simon Peter William and his wife Niteshwari Ratanlal before a city court in connection with the seizure of hybrid ganja worth Rs 4 crore from Ahmedabad airport. The court granted their police remand until 2 PM on August 31, following arguments by the government prosecutor.
During interrogation, Simon confessed to sending his wife to Thailand to procure the contraband from an individual named Sabti. The couple intended to deliver the hybrid ganja to an associate on instructions from another contact, Mohmand Sohel. Police confirmed the conspiracy after analyzing their mobile phones, which showed direct communication with both individuals about the drug transaction.
The case unfolded when Customs and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) launched an investigation into two missing bags from a Bangkok-Ahmedabad flight. One bag was recovered on August 13, and a second — a handbag — was found two days later, containing eight packets of hybrid ganja.
The bag was traced to Niteshwari, a resident of Punjab. When contacted by Air Asia staff, she insisted the bag be handed over to her driver, who turned out to be her husband, Simon Peter William. He was arrested upon arrival to collect the baggage, and both were taken into custody shortly afterward.
Authorities are now investigating their broader network, including international and domestic links to drug trafficking operations.
