A daring attempt to sell stolen jewellery ended in arrest after alert staff at a gold shop in Ranebennur tipped off authorities. Shridevi Sanjeev Kattekar, a resident of Hubballi, attempted to offload 236 grams of stolen gold on February 21, 2026.
Vigilant Gold Shop Staff Foil Crime
Employees noticed Shridevi’s nervous behavior and the lack of paperwork for the massive haul, valued at approximately Rs16 lakh. They kept her engaged under the guise of “valuation checks” while secretly alerting the police.
The Ranebennur City Police swooped in, seized the ornaments, and took Shridevi into custody.
Details of the Theft
Investigations revealed that the jewellery was stolen from a residence in Hubballi just days before her attempted sale. Authorities confirmed that the suspect likely thought transporting the stolen gold across districts would avoid detection, but the vigilance of the shop staff and rapid police action prevented further crime.
The recovered jewellery is now held as evidence while police coordinate with Hubballi authorities to identify the original owners. Shridevi remains in custody pending her court appearance.
