A 45-year-old shop-owner, Rehmati Khatum, was arrested on Sunday after allegedly strangling her 12-year-old adopted nephew to death in Tronica City, Ghaziabad. The incident occurred after the boy reportedly stole money from her grocery shop’s safe.
The victim, identified as the adopted son of Rehmati’s sister, was found dead after his mother, Ajmati Khatun from Begusarai, Bihar, lodged a complaint with the police. On Wednesday, she reported that her son had been killed by her sister, Rehmati, due to a theft that took place at the shop. Following the complaint, the police registered a murder case on Saturday.
According to Surendra Nath Tiwari, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Ghaziabad Rural, Rehmati had adopted the boy eight years ago after becoming widowed and being unable to have children. Both Rehmati and the boy had moved to Ghaziabad, where they lived above the grocery shop.
In her confession to the police, Rehmati explained that the boy’s disobedient behavior and frequent school absences had been a source of frustration. On the day of the incident, he allegedly stole cash from the shop’s safe, which led to the fatal confrontation.
Rehmati was arrested by police on Sunday, and further investigations are underway as the case progresses.
