BILLINGS, Mont. – Former New Day Inc. CEO Sheri Lynn Boelter, 53, has been charged with embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from the Billings-based mental health nonprofit, allegedly using company funds to make personal purchases including furniture, designer clothing, and lingerie.
Boelter faces two felony charges in Yellowstone County District Court: embezzlement of property exceeding $10,000 and forgery in a scheme over $1,500. Prosecutors say the total stolen may range between $25,000 and $100,000.
New Day Inc., also known as New Day Ranch Mental Health Center, offers counseling and addiction treatment services for adults and youth in Billings. The organization’s board chairman, Jeff Berger, alerted police in January after noticing questionable charges on Boelter’s company credit card that could not be justified as business expenses.
According to charging documents, the purchases included beauty products, protein drinks, a gaming computer, luxury handbags, women’s clothing, and home furnishings. Investigators later searched Boelter’s home and recovered several of the items, including furniture, electronics, and personal accessories.
Officers also found a folder containing research on “potential legal consequences” of embezzlement, with handwritten notes referencing possible defense strategies.
In addition, three New Day employees reported that their signatures were forged on funding documents, suggesting a broader pattern of deceit.
Boelter, who left the organization in October 2024 after serving as CEO for three years, has not yet entered a plea. She previously led several local nonprofit organizations, including the Tumbleweed Runaway Program, where she left under controversy in 2015.
Authorities and New Day officials continue to assess the full financial impact of the alleged embezzlement.
