SHELBYVILLE, Ill. — Ryan Brown, a teacher at Shelbyville High School, was arrested on August 3 after being accused of strangling a woman.
The Shelby County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Brown with aggravated domestic battery, unlawful restraint, and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence. Authorities say Brown strangled the victim, prevented her from leaving the residence, and stopped her from calling 911 by removing and smashing her smartwatch.
Court records reveal Brown admitted to strangling the woman and acknowledged a previous incident where he broke her leg. He also admitted to strangling her until she lost consciousness on an earlier occasion.
A preliminary hearing for Brown is scheduled for August 25.
Shelbyville High School Principal Kyle Ladd confirmed Brown’s position as a teacher but deferred questions about Brown’s current employment status to the superintendent’s office, which has been contacted for comment.
The school district has sent a letter to parents regarding the incident.
