A Bangladesh court has sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison after finding her guilty in a land scam case. The ruling was delivered Monday by Judge Md Rabiul Alam of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-4.
The verdict also extends to members of her family. Hasina’s sister, Sheikh Rehana, received a seven-year prison term, while her niece, British MP Tulip Siddiq, was sentenced to two years. All three were charged in the same corruption case, according to a report from The Daily Star.
This marks the fourth conviction against Hasina in graft cases brought by Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), further intensifying political tensions surrounding the former leader.
