ORRINGTON, Maine (WGME) – Bail has been set at $250,000 for a Maine man accused of killing his infant daughter.
Police responded on Jan. 16 to a report of an unresponsive 12-week-old, Lyla Samuels, in Orrington. She was rushed to a Bangor hospital, but tragically died on Jan. 18.
The infant’s father, 24-year-old Shawn Samuels of Orrington, was initially arrested for domestic violence elevated aggravated assault and two counts of bail violation. Following Lyla’s death, he was charged with murder.
An autopsy conducted by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta ruled Lyla’s death a homicide. According to the Bangor Daily News, the autopsy revealed broken ribs and brain swelling.
Samuels made his first court appearance on Wednesday, where a judge set his bail at $250,000. He is currently being held at Penobscot County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court again next month.
