HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A former Harris County mail room clerk, Sharika Prejean, has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of credit card fraud, according to court documents.

Prejean, who once served as a clerk supervisor and previously worked for the U.S. Postal Service, was accused of stealing the identity of a man over the age of 65 in 2023.

She originally faced two charges: identity theft and credit card abuse, but those charges were dismissed after she was convicted of credit card fraud on April 7.

Authorities say the fraud was discovered while Prejean worked at the Harris County Clerk’s Office mail room, where she allegedly abused her position to commit fraud. Investigators believe she may have exploited her access to sensitive information, with at least nine potential victims identified.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office also revealed that Prejean is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars while working for the USPS, prior to her employment with the county.

The investigation into other possible victims remains ongoing.
