In a significant drug bust, Kalady police arrested two Assam natives, Shariful Islam (27) and Sheikh Farid (23), with 21 grams of heroin from Thettaly in Chovvara on Monday. Both hail from Nagaon district, Assam.
The arrests followed a tip-off received by district police chief M Hemalatha. Acting on the information, police tracked the duo, who were reportedly attempting to sell heroin while riding a motorcycle. When approached by officers, the accused attempted to flee but were chased down and caught.
Upon inspection, police discovered that the heroin was concealed inside two soap boxes kept in their bag. According to officials, the accused were selling drugs among interstate migrant workers in the region. The narcotics were allegedly brought from Assam for distribution.
The accused were produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. The investigation was carried out by a team led by Inspector Anilkumar T Meppilli, including SI Rejimon, ASIs Naijo, Jinson, Prasad, PA Abdul Manaf, and senior CPOs Benny Isaac, Varghese T Venatt, TA Afsal, and Prasad.
Authorities are investigating further to uncover the supply network and potential local connections to the trafficking route.
